If the video chat feature is enabled on your platform, you will be able to not only send written messages to other users on the platform, but to video chat with them as well.
You will be able to start a video chat with any user that you have permission to see on the platform and who you have permission to message.
The video chat feature can be found via the messaging page. However, a video chat can be started from three different locations on the platform:
- Directly via the messaging page:
When starting a video chat directly from the messaging page, the video chat option will become available once you have initiated a written conversation with the user.
2. Via a user’s profile:
3. Via the Mentoring Relationships page:
How do I start a video chat?
To start a video chat with another user, you can click on the button in any one of the above 3 locations on the platform.
This will then open up a video chat box, prompting you to begin the chat.
Once you click on ‘Start a Video Chat’, the video chat popup will then appear.
Here you can enter the name that you would like to appear in the chat, with the default showing the name within your profile on the platform.
You can choose to have your camera on or off. If you turn your video off, your profile picture from the platform will appear within the chat.
An email notification will be sent to the user at the same time. If the user is on the platform, they will see a popup on the top right of the screen, letting them know that they have an incoming call. They will be able to accept or decline the call directly in the popup box.
Accepting the call:
To accept the call, you can click on the Accept button. You will then be redirected to the private messages page and the next popup will appear, prompting you to join the video chat. Click on the Join Video Chat button to enter the video chat window.
Once the call has ended, you will receive an on-screen notification. You will also be able to call back immediately or at a later stage via the call back button or any of the 3 methods listed above.
Once you start a call, it will remain active for one minute waiting for the other user to connect. If they do not connect, the call will end and you will receive this pop-up notice:
On the other side, the user will receive a notification within their messages that they missed a call and will be prompted to call back.
Scheduling the Call
We recommend that the time of the video chat is pre-arranged and that both users are within the messages page to ensure that the call is not missed.
You can schedule the video chat via a user's profile, by clicking on the little calendar icon under their name.
You can then schedule the time of the call, adding a topic and a message.
Once you send the invitation, the meeting will be added to your calendar.
